PM lays foundation stone for Manipur water supply project worth over Rs 3,000 crore
Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for Manipur water supply project worth about Rs 3054.58 crore under Jal Jeevan Mission through video conferencing. The ambitious project is being funded with a loan component by the New Development Bank.
The project is an externally funded project with an aim to provide freshwater household tap connections (FHTCs) to remaining households in the Greater Imphal Planning area, 25 towns and for 1,731 rural habitants covering 2,80,756 households in 16 districts of Manipur.
At least 1,700 villages in the state will also benefit from this project by getting fresh drinking water in their homes.
“We are solving the problems related to water crisis faced by at least lakh of mothers and sisters in Manipur by bringing fresh tap water in their homes and making their lives easier,” said Modi.
PM Modi also said that the project has been designed with the help of local panchayats and people living in the state, which will also generate employment opportunities for thousands of people.
The Manipur Water Supply project is an important component of efforts of the state government to achieve the goal of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ by 2024. Moreover, this project will enable to solve the long pending water crisis in the state, it said.
Assuring help to the people in the region in times of trouble, PM Modi also said that people in Northeast India are battling with double challenges of COVID-19 and flood. And due to incessant rainfall, many people have lost their lives and many are forced to leave their homes due to flood amid the pandemic.
"I assure you that everyone is with you in this difficult time," he said.
Addressing the event, PM Modi also informed that under the Prime Minister Gareeb Kalyan Ann Yojana, at least over 25 lakh people in Manipur have been provided with free foodgrain during the ongoing pandemic. Moreover, more than 1.5 lakh women were provided with free LGP gas cylinders under the Ujawala Yojana.
The event was attended by Union minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union minister of state (independent charge) for development of North Eastern Region (NEC) Jitendra Singh, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and Governor Najma Heptulla.
