Imphal: Days after a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Soibam Subhaschandra accused Congress legislators of forcing him to sign a resignation letter from the party last month, former chief minister of Manipur and Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh on Friday refuted the claim and said that his party had never forced any MLA to resign from any party.

Ibobi, in a press conference, rejected the baseless allegation of Subhaschandra on his resignation being forced by Congress and stated that he joined the Congress party on his own will without the influence of the state Opposition party.

Subhaschandra was one of the three BJP MLAs who had resigned from the party along with four National People’s Party (NPP) and two other MLAs on June 17 that had almost crumbled the N Biren Singh-led coalition government in Manipur.

On July 4, Subhaschandra, who was elected Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Assembly constituency on BJP ticket, had filed an FIR at the Patsoi Police Station against two Congress legislators — MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh and MLA Keisham Meghachandra Singh — while alleging that he was forcefully confined and physically and mentally tortured.

As per the FIR lodged, Subhaschandra alleged that he was threatened and forced to resign from primary membership of BJP and his post as the MLA.

Ibobi also stated that senior Congress MLAs K Meghachandra and Th Lokeshwar, who was also a Speaker, and Congress PCC member H Vikramjit were completely innocent, and the allegations of Subhaschandra against them are concocted and baseless.

The Congress leader further stated that BJP minister Th Biswajit Singh was named in a written complaint by ex-MLA of BJP Subhaschandra for colluding the so-called forced resignation letter. However, Ibobi said that BJP minister and Congress had no link, as the recent political crisis was due to BJP’s internal problems.

Congress spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei also pointed out that the complaint clearly exposes the internal tussle in BJP MLAs.

“Due to such internal problems of BJP; Manipur is having poor governance at present. Therefore, people want change and the change is towards Congress only,” he said.

I strongly condemn the manner in which two senior Congress MLAs along with PCC member have been wrongly alleged in the FIR. Rule of law must prevail. Vendetta politics must stop. Love must resign over hatredness, he wrote on his Twitter handle.

Last month, nine MLAs, including three BJP and four NPP legislators, walked out from the N Biren Singh-led coalition government in Manipur, while accusing the chief minister for functioning the state government in an autocratic manner.

However, the political cracks later mended after breakthrough meeting held between the four NPP MLAs along with its chief Conrad Sangma and North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and Assam minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma with union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi.
