Manipur: ‘Education sector needs to keep up with global changes’

The effectiveness of the subjects or courses on offer in higher education to be analysed in line with market demand and their purpose in the development of society

Imphal: Manipur education minister Thokchom Radheshyam Singh on Thursday said that the state must upgrade education provided at colleges and higher educational institutions to keep up with the changing times.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day panel discussion on ‘Emerging Disciplines and Their Prospects and Challenges in Manipur’ organised by the state project directorate of Rashtriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan, in Imphal.

Minister Radheshyam stressed that courses offered at educational institutions must be relevant and productive in the future.

“The courses offered need to be in line with market demand and their purpose in the development of the society. Employability is only one of the aspects of education,” he added.

Addressing the issue of teacher shortage in the state, the minister said that unlike other departments, appointing a teacher is not easy.

The state plans to conduct a survey and audit student-teacher ratio and other related infrastructural demands of the higher educational institutions. A series of meetings with the officials from education and technical education departments is planned. Depending on the feasibility, a centrally located institution could be appointed to provide classes on some subjects to address the issue of teacher shortage.

He also urged the teachers to collaborate and communicate to work as a team to improve and bring advancement in the education sector in the sector.
