New Delhi: Sanjita Chanu, two-time Commonwealth Games gold medal winning weightlifter from Manipur, will finally be conferred with Arjuna Award that was put on hold since 2018 after she was recently cleared of all doping charges.

According to reports, the sports ministry has confirmed that Chanu will be conferred with the coveted Arjuna Award as per an order from the Delhi High Court in 2018 that directed the selection committee to consider her award and keep their decision in a sealed cover and disclose it only if she is cleared of all doping charges in future.

"Sanjita is absolved of all the doping charges by the international federation, so we will have to abide by the Delhi High Court order and consider her for the Arjuna award," said reports.

Chanu had earlier filed a writ petition before Delhi High Court after she was ignored for the 2017 Arjuna Award challenging the committee's decision for excluding her from the list of awardees.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) later dropped the doping charges against Chanu due to "non-conformities" in the handling of her test sample. Chanu has said that she will also seek compensation from the IWF for the "trauma" they gave her.

Sanjita had earlier won several gold medals in 2014 and 2018 during the Commonwealth Games in 48kg and 53kg categories.
