Manipur: CBI summons former CM Ibobi Singh over ‘misuse of funds’

Ex-CM O Ibobi Singh has been charged by CBI in connection with an alleged case of misappropriation of development funds worth Rs 332 crore in Manipur

Imphal: Amid the political drama and COVID-19 pandemic in Manipur, a team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrived in the state on Tuesday to question former chief minister and Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh in connection with an alleged case of misappropriation funds.

According to reports, the team which arrived in Imphal will be questioning the former CM and other officials involved in the alleged misappropriation case at the agency office on Wednesday.

Last November, on request of the state government, the central agency raided the former chief minister’s residence at Thoubal Makha Leikai and his quarters located at Babupara in Imphal in connection with alleged misappropriation of development funds worth Rs 332 crore.

The former CM, who was then the chairman of the Manipur Development Society (MDS), had purportedly conspired with others during his tenure from June 2009 to July 2017 and misappropriated government development funds worth approximately Rs 332 crore out of Rs 518 crore that was entrusted to them for the purpose of executing developmental works.

The CBI also named three former MDS chairman namely, DS Poonia, PC Lawmuknga and O Nabakishore Singh, all retired bureaucrats.

Another two officials who have named in the FIR lodged by the CBI including the former project director of MDS Y Ningthem Singh and it’s administrative officer S Ranjit Singh, the report said.
