Polls being widely followed due to political development in state; ex-MLA T Mangibabu of Cong contesting against L Sanajaoba of BJP
Imphal: The casting of votes for Manipur’s lone Rajya Sabha seat is underway at Legislative Assembly in Imphal on Friday.
The voting, which started at 9 am, will continue till late afternoon, as per reports.
This time, the election in Manipur has taken an interesting turn following the resignation of three BJP MLAs, the ruling party in the state; and six coalition members, including four National People’s Party (NPP), one Trinamool Congress (TMC) and one independent MLA from Jiribam quitting their support to BJP-led government in the state.
The BJP has fielded the titular king of Manipur Leishemba Sanajaoba while former MLA T Mangibabu is the Congress nominee.
Of the total 60 assembly members, 49 legislators have voting rights this time, wherein the seven Congress MLAs defected to BJP as well as former minister Th Shyamkumar were barred from voting the Rajya Sabha election.
Likewise, another three BJP MLAs who had resigned from the primary membership of the party on Wednesday night and later the Speaker approved their resignation from BJP would not be able to cast their votes, said report.
On Thursday evening, secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly issued a bulletin and announced that the seats of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC, Tamenglong AC and Henglep AC are lying vacant.
