Manipur jawan martyred in J&K, mortal remains to reach home today

Imphal: An Indian Army soldier, Sepoy Lungambui Abonmei from Manipur, was martyred when Pakistani troops opened fire along LoC in the Kirni sector of Poonch district in Jammu & Kashmir on Sunday.

His mortal remains is expected to arrive at Imphal Airport on Monday afternoon, according to sources.

As per reports, 29-year-old Abonmei from 10 Assam Regiment was critically injured and later succumbed to his wounds on Sunday morning.

Two other soldiers -- identified as Lienkhothien Senghon and Tangsoik Kwianiungar -- were also injured in the firing. They were later airlifted to the military hospital at Udhampur, reports said.

“Pakistani troops fired mortars and other weapons along the Line of Control (LoC). Befitting response is being given by the Indian Army,” national media quoted defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia as saying.

“IndianArmy #LtGenYKJoshi, #ArmyCdrNc and all ranks salute the supreme sacrifice of Sepoy Lungambui Abonmei; offer deepest condolences to the family,” Indian Army tweeted.

Similarly, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh condoled the death of the Indian Army soldier during the line of duty and remarked that service to the nation with supreme sacrifice is the highest form of patriotism.

"You left us for the comfort & safety of 130 crore Indians. The nation is proud of Sepoy Lungambui Abonmei from Manipur," Singh tweeted.

Governor Najma Heptulla also said, “I salute the supreme sacrifices of Sepoy Lungambui Abonmei from Manipur, the entire nation is proud of him. My condolences to the family.”

Sepoy Abonmei belonged to Ariang Khunkhu Naga village in Kangpokpi district and is survived by his wife and a two-year-old son.

As per sources, the late Sepoy was waiting to go home to visit his father who is fighting against last-stage cancer.
