Manipur: Trains to Jiribam terminate at Guwahati due to rainfall

Railway services has been disrupted due to inclement weather and train carrying at least 1,028 passengers from Chennai which was supposed to reach Jiribam on June 2 halted at Guwahati

Imphal: Trains en route to Jiribam railway station in Manipur have been terminated at Guwahati as incessant rains washed away railway tracks between Lamding and Badarpur in Assam.

According to chief J Suresh Babu, railway services have been disrupted due to inclement weather and a train carrying at least 1,028 passengers from Chennai which was supposed to reach Jiribam on June 2 halted at Guwahati. Later, the state government hired as many as 44 buses from Assam and brought them home, it said.

Another train from Mumbai carrying at least 1,639 passengers and scheduled to reach Jiribam on June 4 will be terminated at Guwahati.

The state government has hired 30 buses from Assam and another 23 buses have been sent from Imphal on Wednesday to Guwahati to bring back the Mumbai returnees, said chief secretary in a statement.

According to the official, it will likely take at least 10 days to repair the railway tracks and to resume the railway services to Jiribam.

Since the first evacuation of the stranded citizens in various parts of the country by rail from May 13, a total of 22 trains have arrived at Jiribam bringing back over 22,419 people.

Of the 22 trains, three train each were from Chennai and Hyderabad, two trains each from Delhi, Mumbai and Gujarat, one each from Punjab, Goa, Vijayawada, Uttarakhand, Pune, Kerala, Jaipur and Haryana.

As on May 3, a total of 6,353 returnees are at various dedicated institutional quarantine centres across the state. Around 11,958 returnees from metro cities are at community quarantine centres for the mandatory 14 days’ quarantine period.

So far, the state government is running 17 institutional quarantine centres and 770 community quarantine centres.
