Imphal: In the wake of the ongoing lockdown over COVID-19 pandemic, the Manipur government on Tuesday approved the promotion of Class XI students to Class XII without conducting board exams.

In a notification issued by the commissioner of education department T Ranjit Singh said the Class XI examination conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur (COHSEM) for the academic year 2019-2020 will be done away with in view of the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) across the globe.

The state cabinet has approved the same based on the term test performance, etc, of students, reports said.

Action taken reports by the schools must be intimated to the state government, the notification further instructed.

In February, the state education department cancelled the Class XI board exams after question papers of at least five papers, including Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology and Manipuri, were leaked.

The final board exams for Class XI, which began on February 17, was earlier scheduled to finish on March 26.

However, just before the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, the education board announced that the examinations will be rescheduled for the remaining papers on a later date.

Despite no active case of COVID-19 in Manipur, the state government has introduced a slew of measures to contain the spread of the virus in the state.
