Manipur: Hailstones ravage Ukhrul, 2nd in a week, amid lockdown

Sudden downpour accompanied by hailstorm hits Manipur’s Ukhrul district; not unnatural, such events are a good sign for agricultural activities, say locals

Ukhrul: Heavy hailstones with strong winds struck Ukhrul district in Manipur on Tuesday afternoon, the second in a week, amidst the lockdown over COVID-19 pandemic.

The sudden downpour accompanied by hailstones was felt across the district around 2:30 pm and lasted for a few minutes. However, no damage to property or human casualties were reported till the time of filing this report.

On April 15, heavy hailstones accompanied by thunderstorm and cloudburst lashed many parts of Manipur, including Ukhrul and Senapati districts, the first in the year, breaking the dry spell which the residents of the district have been facing for the last two months.

As per weathermen’s forecast, people in the state have been experiencing inclement weather with heavy winds for the last couple of days, bringing normal life to a standstill in addition to the lockdown.

According to locals, hailstones at this time are not unnatural and such events spell good signs for agricultural activities.

Due to sporadic rainfall, people in Ukhrul have been experiencing water scarcity for the past two months. As per the locals, the growing water crisis in Ukhrul, especially in the district headquarters, shows how climate change has really impacted natural resources.
