COVID-19: 69 prisoners released on bail in Manipur amid lockdown

Imphal: Manipur government has released as many as 69 prisoners, including one convict on parole till date following the recent Supreme Court’s order to all states and Union Territories to decongest prisons in an attempt to contain the COVID-19 pandemic last month, an official statement said on Saturday.

Altogether, 64 inmates were released from Sajiwa Jail and another five prisoners from Central Jail on interim bail for a period of three months.

The concerned courts of Manipur took the decision on the recommendation of the constituted high-powered committee chaired by Justice Kh Nobin Singh and chief secretary J Suresh Babu and Addl DGP (prisons) P Doungel as members.

As informed by superintendent of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa (MCJS) S Touthang, the released prisoners were dropped at their respective places by the district police concerned in view of the total lockdown in the state.

Earlier on Thursday, 11 inmates were also released from Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa as a first phase in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The released prisoners were handed over to their respective family members by Imphal East district police, as per reports.

The government has introduced slew of measures to control the spread of the virus in the state, including sealing of borders points with Myanmar, regular screening of truck drivers and others who are transporting essential goods to the state.

So far, Manipur has two confirmed cases for novel coronavirus and a 23-year-old girl, the first COVID-19 patient has been cured and already discharged from the hospital.

As on April 18, as many as 1,92,335 passengers have been screened from entry points and 328 samples had tested for coronavirus, the official said.
