Imphal: Amid reports that mobile internet and data services, which were disrupted on Monday following clashes between two communities in Chassad village of Manipur’s Kamjong district, will resume on Tuesday, chief minister N Biren Singh termed the entire episode as a handiwork of miscreants to create communal disharmony in society.

Addressing media persons on Monday night, Singh said that culprits involved in the incident did not belong to any particular community. “This is the handiwork of miscreants to disturb the peace and harmony in state,” the chief minister added.

Singh also announced that the state government has decided to form a three-member committee to investigate into the issue and find out the culprits involved.

Meanwhile, relief and medical teams have been sent to the affected areas and the state government is likely to provide compensation to the affected families once the investigation into the incident is over.

Official sources also informed EastMojo that an additional director general of police (ADGP)-level officer is monitoring the situation at Chassad. The situation in the district is reportedly under control now.

A day after clashes erupted between two communities in the village, the district administration imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in and around the district headquarters to prevent any untoward incidents in the region.

The Kamjong district magistrate’s order came after the situation turned volatile on Sunday. As per reports, the jhum fields of a local villager were burnt down by unknown persons in Chassad. In retaliation, angry locals set an under-construction petrol pump owned by a local belonging to another community. Some workers at the petrol pump were also reportedly beaten up, said reports.

Later, as per reports, Chassad locals stopped passenger vehicles along the village. Unidentified youths also threw stones at village elders who were on their way for a meeting over the issue.
