Imphal: Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom from Manipur and another 12 Indian boxers, who have returned home on Friday night from Jordan’s Olympic qualifiers, have reportedly kept them in self-quarantine for at least 10 days as preventive measures amid the coronavirus threat worldwide.

As per reports, the decision was taken by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) following an advisory by the Sports Authority of India (SAI)) to take preventive measure as per the travel advisory issued by the government of India recently.

Mary Kom and other Indian boxers were training in Italy, one of the worst-hit by coronavirus pandemic till February 26 before heading at Amman in Jordan and competed in the Asia-Oceania Olympic qualifiers from March 3 to 11.

Despite the health clearances by Jordanian Olympic Association, the Indian athletes were advised to remain home and not to visit SAI centers during their self-quarantine period, the report said.

The intention is not to expose any of them to any risk as other athletes are undergoing training at SAI centres, it said.

The only exemption to stay inside the SAI centers were given to coaches, including the two foreign coaches Santiago Nieva of Sweden and Raffaele Bergamasco of Italy since it is their official residences in the country, said the report.

As per the travel advisory issued by the Centre, any incoming travelers, including Indian citizens should be quarantined for a minimum of 14 days upon their arrival in India.
