Manipur forest dept launches online portal, a first in the country

The new portal will ensure proper monitoring of transit of forest produces, revenue generation and prevention of illegal transport and wildlife crimes

Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday launched an online portal and interactive website for the state forest department, the first-of-its-kind in the country, to ensure greater conservation of forest produces in the state.

The introduction of the online portal will ensure proper monitoring of transit of forest produces, revenue generation and prevention of illegal transport and wildlife crimes, said officials.

Bringing in technology-based intervention is the need of the hour owing to rampant destruction of forests and killing of wildlife, especially in the hill areas due to an absence of proper system to monitor such action in the region.

The functionalities of the online portal which have been developed by the forest department through National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (NICSI) under the ministry of electronics & information technology will ensure ease of business to both customers/consignees and the forest department staff.

The user-friendly and people-centric dynamic portal and its website will also ensure good governance, transparency, two-flow of information and a hassle-free support to the customer, it said.

Another important aspect of the portal is to advanced the revenue collection of the state through online payment gateway preventing mismanagement on use of public funds and construct an efficient management of forest conservation.

Soon after the official launch of the portal, CM Biren Singh said that now people may just sit at their homes and get access to information about the forest in the state on their mobile phones via the online portal.

Biren also appealed the people in the state to take full advantage of such initiatives taken up by the government to ensure healthy coordination between the government and the public for a better tomorrow.

The new portal which has comprehensive features, including Transit Passes (TPs) with secured QR code, intends to remove the illegal practice of using fake transit passes while transporting illegal forest produces.

Moreover, platforms like nursery management system, mechanism for management of wood based industries, scheme-wise and district-wise schemes will optimise its reach through the public domain.

The highly-quality data and information on forest and its rich resources in the state can now be accessed by the people and get detailed management plans for forest conservation.
