Manipur: Govt teachers announce relay hunger strike from Feb 29

Teachers’ relay hunger strike will start from Feb 29 till March 7 across state demanding govt to rectify and implement Manipur Services (Revised Pay) Rules, 2019

Imphal: The Council Of Teachers Association (COTA), an apex body of the teaching staffs from elementary to higher secondary level, on Thursday announced to organised relay hunger strike in protest against the state government’s alleged apathy towards their demands on adoption of 7th Central revised pay in post to post parity and rectification of the Manipur Services (Revised Pay) Rules, 2019.

The relay hunger strike will start from February 29 till March 7 across the state.

During a press conference held at Manipur Press Club in Imphal, COTA convenor, Ch Shantakumar Singh, informed that despite series of protests and strikes been staged in the past, however, government remain indifferent to the issue.

According to Shantakumar, the state government issued an order of downward revision of teachers’ pay in 2019 which was completely shattered the purpose and intent of the Central 7th Pay Commission recommendation.

In last August, the government teachers’ association had submitted a memorandum to the chief minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, requesting to rectification and implementation of Manipur Services (Revised Pay) Rules, 2019.

Later in December last, the team had also submitted an ultimatum letter to CM Biren Singh, however, as per COTA, the state government fail to illicit any positive response to their calls till date.

“All the members of the COTA are ready to fight against the government for demanding our legitimate rights. Until and unless the government does not fulfill our demands, we will launch intensify our protests,” said Dr Longjam Ritendro, co-convenor of COTA.

Dr Ritendro also said that the state government had already granted the demands of the college teachers to implement the UGC 7th pay scale. However, till now, the state government have not reach out or arrange for any any sort of solution for the government teachers.
