How Manipur’s Hunphun Got Talent 2020 is reviving dying traditions

‘Hunphun Got Talent 2020’, which is being held in Ukhrul as part of 5-day-long Hunphun Luira Phanit 2020, aims to create a platform for young talents of the region

Ukhrul: In an effort to create a niche platform for young talents in Manipur, the ongoing Hunphun Luira Phanit 2020, a seed sowing festival, is all set to feature 19 contestants vying for the ‘Hunphun Got Talent 2020’ title on Wednesday evening.

The five-day-long cultural cum agricultural event under the theme ‘Ngashan Reisangmeiranu’ (meaning ‘let the culture flourish’) aims to spread awareness and revive dying cultures and traditions in the wake of modernisation.

The talent show is also aimed to create a nascent step for the young talents of the region, which in fact has huge untapped talents with lesser exposures.

Speaking with EastMojo, Godfreyson Zingkhai, secretary, Hunphun Luira organising committee, informed that as many as 19 contestants had given their auditions, of which, 11 participants have been selected for the semi-final round which was scheduled to be held at 7 pm on Wednesday evening at Mission Ground, Alungtang in Ukhrul district headquarters.

The winner will take home a cash prize of Rs 20,000, while the 1st and 2nd runners up will get Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively

The talent competition will feature singers, dancers and comedians. among others.

The winner will take home a cash prize of Rs 20,000, whereas the 1st and 2nd runners-up will get Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively.

Similarly, the event will also witness a beauty pageant ‘Hunphun Miss Luira 2020’ where 14 young beauty queens from the hill district are racing for the coveted title.

“I am very excited to join this beauty pageant. And tonight, through this platform we will show and celebrate our femininity. It is also to represent our culture and identity; and to empower the women,” said Yarmila Shadang, one of the contestants.

The purpose of this beauty pageant is to promote the young girls and give them the platform where the young women could explore and identify their talents and build confidence, added Zingkhai.

Luira Phanit, a seed sowing festival which is widely observed by the Nagas in Manipur, is held to invoke the blessings of god, locally known as ‘Ameowo’, to bless the seeds to be sown for the year and to ensure a healthy harvest.

The annual festival is also held to ward off other crop destroying elements such as natural calamities.
