Imphal: Young environmentalist-cum-cyclist from Manipur, Rohan Philem Singh, is all set to embark on his first international cycling expedition from New Delhi to Tokyo in Japan on February 16, on a theme “Inclusion, Love and Dignity”.

This 25-year-old self-made cyclist from Manipur’s Bishnupur district will pedal a distance of 10,000 km from the national capital and crossing the South Asian countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Osaka to Tokyo within six and half months time.

During this solo cycling mission, Philem will focus on raising awareness on disabilities with a message of “Service without salary” and “Ride for the rights of disable people” in the commencement of the 2020 Olympic Game and Para Olympic Game in Tokyo.

A Masters degree student at Sharda University in Greater Noida, Philem feels that one needs to have a passion and zeal in oneself to achieve such remarkable cycling feat.

“There are so many people who have the money but do not have the attitude to travel and explore around the places,” Philem said to EastMojo.

“This has become my life. I used to get myself attached to everything that comes with this. So I traveled around, interacted with new people and tasted new food. And the most important things are I got to learn with new a culture, new personality every day and that’s how I learnt,” he added.

This young lad from Moirang town, Philem was first noticed when he sets-off 28,000 km from Delhi to Imphal in 2018 on a message ‘Free Pollution’. Ever since then, he has already toured and covered the entire country during six cycling missions based on humanity and the environment.

Despite his wanting to pursue a career in the film industry, Philem now calls this mission as “God’s calling and his blessings” upon him for a humanitarian cause.

“I never plan to become as I am today but I am happy,” he said.

As informed by Philem, many people from the state, including CAF & PD minister Karam Shyam, works minister Th Biswajit Singh, other former ministers and MLAs have come forward and financially supported this mission.

Before he left for New Delhi for a greater mission, Philem was also given a warm send-off ceremony by his locality youth organisation on Thursday.
