Legislation seeks to extend reservation for SCs, STs in Lok Sabha, state assemblies till January 25, 2030; adopted during special session of legislative assembly
Imphal: The Manipur Legislative Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution on ratification of Reservation Bill for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) for another 10 years.
The Bill, which seeks to extend the political reservation for SCs and STs in Lok Sabha and state assemblies till January 25, 2030, was adopted during a special one-day session of the 9th session (part-II) of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly in Imphal.
The House adopted a resolution on Ratification of Amendments to the Constitution of India falling within the purview of clause (d) of provision to Clause (2) of Article 368, proposed to be made by the Constitution (126th) Amendment Bill which was passed by Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The motion was moved by Leader of the House and chief minister N Biren Singh.
Prior to the motion the secretary, Manipur Legislative Assembly relayed the message from Rajya Sabha Secretariat for ratification of amendments to the Constitution (126th) Amendment Bill, 2019 and laid the message on the Table of the House along with the copy of the Bill as passed by both Houses of Parliament on December 10 and 12, respectively.
As per the report, these provisions, if not extended further, would have ceased effect from January 25 this year.
According to the 2011 census, the population of SCs is over 20.13 crore and STs is more than 10 crore.
