Tamenglong: The 16th edition of the state-level Orange Festival, which is currently being organised in Tamenglong district, is showcasing some of the finest oranges found in Manipur. The three-day festival started on December 16 and will conclude on Wednesday.
While speaking at the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest, chief minister N Biren Singh assured the people that the district’s oranges would soon receive a geographical indication (GI) tagging certificate given the fine quality and unique taste of the seasonal fruit.
Moreover, separate funds would be earmarked in the state budget for festivals related to fruits, Singh informed.
Tamenglong, which is home to the Zeliangrong Naga community, is known as the largest orange producer in the state given a favourable climatic condition in the region.
The district is also known for the breeding ground of the Amur falcon migratory birds during the roosting season.
The festival is organised by district administration under the sponsorship of North Eastern Council (NEC) and Manipur government to promote the fruit and encourage its growers for an alternate source of income.
In this year’s edition, around 370 orange growers from the district entered the best orange producer competition with a winner cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, and Rs 1 lakh and Rs 75,000 for 1st and 2nd runners up, respectively.
Besides the winners’ prizes, Rs 10,000 each were also given to the all the participating orange growers to mark the celebration as well as encourage the farmers for economic development.
Apart from stalls being set up at public ground showcasing the best orange quality of the season, orange queen contest, orange eating competition, Tamenglong’s Got Talent show, rock concert and choir competition are some of the other attractions of the festival.
Manipur Lok Sabha MP (Outer) Dr Lorho S Pfoze will attend the closing ceremony of the festival as chief guest on Wednesday.
