Manipur: CBI raids ex-CM Ibobi Singh’s home over ‘misuse of funds’

Latest development is part of searches to be carried out by the premier investigating agency at 9 locations in 3 states, including Aizawl, Imphal & Gurugram

Imphal: In a surprise development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday morning raided Manipur’s former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh’s residence at Thoubal Makha Leikai and his quarters located at Babupara in connection with an alleged misappropriation of development funds worth Rs 332 crore in the state, said sources.

According to sources, the raid is part of searches to be carried out at nine locations in three states, including Aizawl, Imphal and Gurugram.

On Friday, the raid began at the Babupara quarters of the former CM around 7.30 am. Another CBI team carried out a simultaneous raid at Thoubal Makha Leikai, said sources.

The former CM, who was then the chairman of the Manipur Development Society (MDS), had allegedly conspired with others during his tenure from June 2009 to July 2017 and allegedly misappropriated government funds worth approximately Rs 332 crore out of Rs 518 crore that was entrusted to them for the purpose of executing developmental works, the sources said.

As per reports, similar raids were also carried out at residences of Singh’s close aides, including former project director of MDS Yambem Ningthem at Lamlonggei Mantripukhri and also offices of MDS administrative offiver Ranjit, former chief secretaries PC Lamkunnga, and DS Poonia.

The raiding team reportedly seized official documents for further investigation, sources said.
