Imphal: In an innovative initiative to encourage the young minds of Manipur, students studying in Classes IV to VIII of government-run schools got an opportunity to ride a helicopter, that too free of cost, to mark Children’s Day on Thursday.

Organised by the state education department, under the initiative of state education minister Th Radheshyam, the helicopter ‘joyride’ of 25 minutes was witnessed by 30 students who were selected from the ‘valley’ zones, including Imphal East, Imphal West and Wangoi on the first day.

The ride will continue till November 22, and is being funded by the Samagra Shiksha State Implementing Society Manipur, as per reports.

The children were taken around the sky and got to witness some of the important places in the state like Loktak Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Northeast; Keibul Lamjao National Park, a home to the world’s last brow-antlered deer ‘Saingai’; Moirang and portions of Imphal.

The students were the winners of ‘Know Your State’ competition, an initiative to encourage students to understand and explore the state in a unique way in different literary activities, including extempore speeches, quiz and storytelling of other communities.

Earlier, the competitions were conducted in each district and zone of the state, conducted by zonal education officers (ZEOs).

Eleven representatives from each zone, including nine students, one teacher and one representative of ZEO, will get to ride on the helicopter in the next seven days, the reports added.
