Imphal: In the backdrop of the ongoing Naga peace process between the Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM), in which both parties are said to be in the final leg of negotiations, Manipur’s Kuki community on Tuesday announced that it will stage a protest rally across the Kuki-inhabited hill districts of the state on October 30.

The announcement was made by the Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex civil society of the Kukis in the state, as a mark of protest against the government of India for failing to address the demands and aspirations of the Kukis, the official statement said.

As per the statement issued, the protest rally is also to remonstrate against the central government policy as it has failed to consult major stakeholder communities. The central government has made the assurance that it will take into account the interests of all the major stakeholder communities in the state before finalisation of FA.

Similarly, a mass rally will also be held in New Delhi to protect the Kuki ancestral land from inclusion in the autonomous Naga council, it said.

In another statement, it said, “The protest is also to reaffirm its standpoint that the Indo-Naga framework should not contravene the aspirations and interests of other stakeholders, including Kukis and Meiteis, as assured by the Centre.”

Amid the reports of both the parties finding a conclusion of the 22-year-long protracted Naga issues and the political uncertainties prevailing in the state, the Kuki Inpi Manipur is left with no other options but to hold the protest rally against the ongoing talks between the Centre and NSCN-IM, it said.

It further stated the Kuki Inpi Manipur appreciates the efforts of the Centre for bringing about lasting peace in the state of Manipur. However, the Centre must ensure that solution with the NSCN-IM should not be the beginning of another tumultuous period in the state, it said.

The GoI should in no uncertain terms not try to appease a certain community at the cost of others, the statement warned.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur stands for peace and always follows the policy of mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence. However, it will not accept any solution of the Framework Agreement if it is a threat to the political interest of the Kukis, it said.
