Guwahati: Six-time world boxing champion and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee MC Mary Kom on Tuesday won the title of ‘Asia’s Best Female Athlete’ at the 22nd edition of the Asian Sports Press Union (AIPS Asia) meeting in Selengkor, Malaysia.
The meeting, known as AIPS Asia Congress 2019, was held from August 26 to 28, where representatives from 30 countries took part.
The boxer could not attend the event, therefore, the award was received by eminent sports journalist Subodh Malla Barua.
The ace boxer recently won gold at the at the Second India Open International Boxing tournament in Guwahati. She has also been selected as a panelist for national sports awards and will give away the awards for athletes and coaches on the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, celebrated as National Sports Day, on August 29.
Meanwhile, South Korean footballer Son Heung Min won the ‘Asia’s Best Male Athlete' award.
The Asian Sports Press Association emphasises on sports journalism in Asia and is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Besides, the association is also responsible for creating an ideal environment for sports journalism that is fair, transparent and to be qualified to create future generations of sports journalists.
