Condemning the killings, various social organisations of Manipur have demanded the state government to take strict action against the culprits behind the incident
Guwahati: Suspected Kuki militants shot dead the chief of Hengjang Kuki village and his nephew on Wednesday afternoon when the duo was travelling in a private vehicle in Manipur.
The deceased chief was identified as Thangneo Kipgen (58), s/o (L) Letkhai Kipgen and Thangminlun Haokip (26), s/o Thenthang Haokip. They were attacked somewhere in between Keikhao and Hengjang village in Kangpokpi district under Saikul sub-division.
According to a survivor of the incident, there were six assailants and they spoke in Kuki dialect, also, they had AK series rifles and M-16 arms.
Police has registered a case in connection with the incident. The motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained.
The incident has caused an uproar in the state with various civil society organisations like Kuki Inpi, Kangpokpi district, etc., have strongly condemning it. Further, it has given a 24-hour ultimatum to the state government to book the culprits, along with a warning that if the same is not done, then wide-scale public agitation will be launched by Kuki Inpi.
In a separate statement, Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) and Thadou Students' Association (TSA) have also condemned the killing and said such anti-social elements disrupt the law-and-order situation of the state.
