Imphal: Nagaland governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya on Thursday evening was sworn in as the new governor of Manipur, in addition to his post as the governor of Nagaland, at Raj Bhawan in Imphal.
During the swearing-in ceremony, senior-most judge of Manipur High Court Justice Lanusungkum Jamir administered the oath of secrecy to office in presence of chief minister N Biren Singh, chief secretary Suresh J Babu, ministers and other state officials at Durbar Hall.
Acharya was given the additional charge on Tuesday as governor of Manipur in absence of Dr Najma A Heptulla, who is on leave for a period of one month, according to the official report.
“The President of India is pleased to appoint Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, governor of Nagaland to discharge the functions of the governor of Manipur, in addition to his own duties, during the absence, on leave of Dr Najma T Heptulla, governor of Manipur,” said a Rashtrapati Bhawan communiqué.
While interacting with media persons, Acharya said: “As a governor is a constitutional head; I want to outright my constitutional duties. Lot of things to be done to strengthen India and all the state should be equally developed. And that is my agenda in Nagaland and I have done it.”
Assuring citizens’ well-being, Acharya said: “Within one month, many things cannot be done but I will try my best. Those who have been denied the benefits of central projects if we can involve them very systematically to get the benefit, then the poorest of poor will strengthen, the strength of the chain lies in the weakest link and that weakest link if we strengthen, then the whole chain will get strengthen. This is my agenda here in Manipur.”
Earlier, former Manipur governor Najma T Heptulla, prior to her leaving to the United States to visit her children, posted a video message on her official Facebook page wishing people of the state for good monsoon season.
