Ukhrul: Six young teams from across the Ukhrul district of Manipur are getting a taste of competitive football by participating in the first-ever Ukhrul FC Baby Cup at the Tahao Ground in Ukhrul town.
While the winning team will take home a cash prize of Rs 10,000, the first runner-up will bag Rs. 5,000 as cash prize.
Organised by Ukhrul FC, one of the pioneer clubs of the district involved in identifying budding talents, in collaboration with Assam Rifles, the inaugural ceremony of the three-day-long tournament saw football lovers from across the district gathering at Tahao Ground on Tuesday.
Of the total six teams, four teams -- Ukhrul FC Academy, Ukhrul Basic Soccer Foundation, Wungyam FC and WRES FC-- have made it to the semi-final rounds, whereas Patkai Christian Academy FC and Ukhrul FC Tata Trust were knocked out during the preliminary rounds.
The tournament, which aims to develop football in the grassroots level, is providing an opportunity to budding talents to play and learn the game in a competitive manner. “Since its inception in 2018, Ukhrul FC has been supporting and nurturing talents in Ukhrul district. That is why this tournament is being organised with an aim to give exposure and tap the potential of young footballers in the district and Manipur in general,” said Som Kasomwoshi, project director, Ukhrul FC.
According to organisers, the ages of the participants at the ongoing league are between five and 12 years of age.
