Imphal: In a high-level meeting chaired by Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday, the House unanimously decided to host the third edition of the much-awaited Shirui Lily Festival from October 16 to 19 this year.

The first meeting of the organising committee of the state-level Shirui Lily Festival, which was held at CM’s office in Imphal, was attended by three sitting MLAs representing Ukhrul and Kamjong districts -- Alfred K Arthur, Khashim Vashum and Leishiyo -- along with state officials and headmen of various villages of Ukhrul district.

After the meeting, Singh took to Twitter to give out the time frame of the festival:

According to reports, the festival, which was supposed to be organised in the month of May, was postponed due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct during the Lok Sabha elections.

During the meeting, the members discussed the tentative dates, identification of venues and formation of district-level Shirui Lily Festival coordination committees.

The festival aims to spread awareness and conserve the endangered state flower ‘Shirui Lily’ as well as to promote the hill district Ukhrul as a potential tourist destination.

In 2018, the five-day-long festival organised by the state tourism department was held from April 24 to 28 with scores of tourists from across the country witnessing the event.

Ukhrul, which is home to state flower ‘Shirui Lily’, is the highest hill district of Manipur and is located at a distance of about 83 km east of capital Imphal.

Myth and legends:

Shirui Lily, the state flower, according to mythology, is said to be the daughter of goddess Philava (princess) who resides and protects the hills of Shirui of Shirui village. Locally known as Kashong Timrawon, the lily is believed to be a kind and protective spirit that rests on Shirui peak, one of the highest peaks in Ukhrul. It also symbolises prosperity and happy life.

How it got popular?

According to report, English botanist and an explorer Frank F Kingdom first discovered the flower in 1946 and introduced it to the world by bagging the prestigious merit prize in the Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show in 1948, London. Since then, the flower has been getting a lot of attractions from tourists.
