Imphal: Former Lok Sabha MP Kim Gangte on Wednesday resigned from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Jananta Party (BJP) over non-issuance of party ticket from Outer Manipur constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The former BJP spokesperson and overall ‘Hill Area’ in-charge of BJP Manipur Pradesh submitted her resignation to the party’s state president.

Addressing the media at the Manipur Press Club, Gangte alleged that the BJP does not support women. She said, “The BJP leadership has betrayed me. They do not want to empower the woman, the weaker section in society. All women workers in BJP have no future.”

The former MP alleged that the BJP government has a nexus with militants, because they allotted the Outer Manipur seat to state unit vice-president Benjamin Mate upon pressure from a Kuki militant group.

She added that denial of ticket to her was not the main reason why she left the party but the great injustice was the “betrayal” committed by the party leadership.

Recalling the time she joined Trinamool Congress (TMC) party and strengthened its base in the state, Gangte said, “I was compelled to leave TMC as the central high command failed to address the woes of the people in the state. She joined BJP in 2017 upon the request by its MLAs.”

She said, in 2017 upon the request by BJP state president and MLAs, she joined the party to collectively work for strengthening its base. She held that the BJP national leadership even verbally assured to her the ticket for the Outer Manipur PC seat in Lok Sabha election 2019.

Claiming that the present BJP organisation is functioning at the behest of favouritism and nepotism, Gangte said that members without powerful backings have no future in the party.

“BJP government is raising slogan for woman empowerment through ‘Beti bachao, beti padao’ mission. If the party sincerely wanted to empower woman, ticket must have been allotted to me, the lone woman MP candidate who vied for party ticket. I deserved the ticket as I have close connection at the grass root level,” she added.
