Every year, a number of events are scheduled by vision organisation and councils who disseminate information about the benefits of wearing sunglasses. Sunglasses are not only a fashion accessory, it is also a necessity to protect the eyes from damage caused by the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. Aviator Sunglasses:
Aviator glasses have teardrop-shaped glass lenses with a thin metal frame. The design of the Aviator was introduced in the year 1936 by Bausch & Lomb Company for military aviators in US. However, with time, the aviator sunglasses became a fashion statement and came more into use. The Aviator sunglasses first came into popularity in the year 1940 when Douglas MacArthur first sported the pair at the Pacific theatre.
Browline Sunglasses:
The Browline glasses come with hard plastic or hard rimmed arms joined together to a lower wire frame. Browlines were first adapted into sunglasses from the 1980s and became one of the most popular styles around.
Oversized
Oversized glasses are large glasses which are worn by women. These glasses are mostly worn by celebrities as a shield from the paparazzi. Oversized glasses provide more protection from the sun rays due to the large areas of the face and skin they cover.
Shutter Shades
Invented in the late 1940s, these glasses comprise a set of parallel horizontal shutters. The main purpose of the shutter shades is not to filter light, but to decrease the amount of sun rays falling into the eyes of the wearer.
Tea shades
These are wire rim sunglasses worn primarily for aesthetic reasons. These glasses became popular during the late 1960s with elaborately coloured and mirrored lenses and the wire earpieces exaggerated. Modern versions of the same are available in plastic lenses.
Wayfarers
The Wayfarer is one of the most popular form of glasses worn today. It is primarily a plastic framed design produced by the Ray Ban Company. This glass, introduced in the year 1952, had lenses that were wider at the top than the bottom and were famously worn by artists like James Dean, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley and the Beatles. Though the initial frames are black, different colours were introduced later. The Wayfarer sunglasses have witnessed many transformations in its design since its inception.
