World First Aid Day is observed on the second Saturday of September every year to spread awareness on first aid and ways to take prevention for injuries and save lives. This year, the Day will be celebrated globally on September 11, 2021.
This day is an annual campaign that promotes the importance of first aid training and increasing its accessibility to save more lives in a crisis. When a person gets a minor or serious injury or illness, the first and immediate assistance given to the patient is known as ‘First Aid’.
World First Aid Day: History
In 2000, this day was established by the IFRC and for more than 100 years, this organization has been providing first aid services to people. The history of this day dates back to 1859 when a young businessman, Henry Dunant, saw the carnage at the battle of Solfrino. He was horrified.
Later on, his book titled ‘Memoirs of Solfrino’ spoke about Dunant’s idea of running an independent organization to provide care to wounded soldiers. It later encouraged the formation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Dunant became the co-founder of the Red Cross. His discoveries state that human suffering is universal and first aid is very important, be it at the time of war or during road and household accidents.
World First Aid Day: Significance
The website of the Red Cross states that many people across the globe get hurt and injured due to lack of timely medical assistance and in some critical cases, many even lose lives. But, if an individual has the knowledge of first aid, then one can save lives rather than waiting for professional help.
Accurate knowledge and training of first aid will reduce as many deaths and injuries. Especially, people from disaster-prone regions and war-torn countries generally don’t get the opportunity to get the required training for first aid. Hence, on this day, the Red Cross also acknowledges such people and sends a message that how a basic idea of first aid could help reduce ‘vulnerabilities and help bring stronger communities’.
