Dimapur: In a remarkable act of community-driven initiative, residents of Pungro Village in Nagaland’s Kiphire District have come together to improve conditions at the Government Middle School (GMS), addressing longstanding infrastructural issues that had hindered the learning environment for both students and teachers.

Faced with overcrowded classrooms due to rising student enrollment, the community took the initiative to lay a concrete floor in one of the school’s largest classrooms, measuring 70 feet by 20 feet. To further enhance accessibility and safety, two new staircases—each 10 feet wide and 10 feet long—were also constructed.

The initiative saw the participation of 95 volunteers and was supported by various community stakeholders including the School Management Committee, Pungro Village Council, Pungro Village Baptist Church, NVG Pungro Village, teaching staff, and the Pungro Village Students’ Union. Numerous individuals and well-wishers also contributed financially and materially to the cause.

Since its establishment, GMS Pungro Village has provided education not only to children from Pungro Village but also to those from neighboring communities, serving as a vital educational center for the region.

The recent community-led renovation has significantly improved classroom conditions by minimising dust issues and creating a more conducive learning environment.

In a statement, the school expressed deep appreciation to all community-based organizations, churches, individuals, and supporters for their financial assistance, material donations, hands-on support, and encouragement. It also stated that their involvement brings “renewed hope” to the students and reminds them they are supported in their pursuit of a better education.

The Government Middle School (GMS) Pungro Village further stated it will remain forever grateful to the people of Pungro Village for their continued support.
