The full moon day or purnima tithi in Vaishakh month is an important day for buddhists across the world because it marks the birthday of the founder of Buddhism, Gautama Buddha. The day is popularly known as Buddha Jayanti or Buddha purnima. This year marks the 2584th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, the enlightened one. However, the date of Buddha purnima varies every year as the traditional Gregorian calendar is determined according to the lunar cycle.

The tithi timings of Buddha Purnima this year will start from 12:45 PM on May 15 and will end around 9:43 AM on May 16.

Buddha Purnima significance

Siddhartha Gautama was in a royal family in Lumbini where he grew up in the luxurious palace of his father, King Suddhodana. However, he renounced all the extravagances and materialistic pleasures at a young age after seeing human sufferings. Subsequently, he started travelling in the search for eternal truth and the actual meaning of life. It is believed that he attained enlightenment under a banyan tree in Bodh Gaya where he was meditating. Thus, Siddhartha who was born in the royal family became the enlightened one.

Buddha Purnima is considered to be an extremely auspicious day as the popular belief is Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment on this day.
