Manipur: First-of-its-kind book café-cum-public library opens in Chandel
Chandel: Over the years, many budding entrepreneurs have emerged in Manipur, turning their innovative ideas into production for larger scale and even created employment opportunities in the state. Joining the latest in the league is a 35-year-old TS Mhanthung Anal from Chandel district who recently launched the first-ever book café cum public library.
Eden Book Café is located in Japhou Bazaar (opposite Kankhu hotel). It is Chandel’s first and only café-cum-bookstore and library, aiming to develop a culture where people from various backgrounds and walks of life connect, grow and recreate.
Speaking with EastMojo, Mhanthung, who did his masters in English from Delhi University said that it took him at least two years to turn the ideas into a full-fledged address for discovering, learning, and sharing ideas, thoughts, and talents over books and coffee.
"After I returned home from Delhi in 2017, I noticed a lack of reading culture in the town and a proper library. The idea germinated from there wherein, space was needed for positive and creative force to come together and have enlightening discussions for the progress of the society," said Mhanthung, who also co-founded Wisecrabs, a non-profit local club along with like-minded and dynamic young people of Chandel.
From installing the first ever Espresso machine in entire Chandel district to promoting budding entrepreneurs, local artists and talents to stand and develop themselves, Eden Book-Café is in regular pursuit to evolve and grow, added the young entrepreneur.
This honest and inspired initiative is to inculcate reading culture in Chandel district as reading habits are slowly losing its sheen amongst the people, especially the youngsters.
It is an attempt to provide a healthy and organic space wherein young people can come together, discuss and share ideas. The future belongs to these young people, and Eden Book-Café aspires to serve as an oasis for them, added Mhanthung.
This novel library cum café is stocked with over 400 books covering different genres.
According to Mhanthung, some of the books were generously donated by individuals for public use. Also, a separate section for brand new books is there for sale purpose.
Eden Book-Café is not a customer-based business model. It is a membership-based brand focused on mutual and positive growth, said Mhanthung.
To avail the service as a library membership, one will have to pay a reasonable amount of Rs 365 for a year.
"If you are a voracious reader and a self-proclaimed book lover, Eden Book-Café is for you. If you are a true coffee lover, Eden Book-Café is for you. If you love to meet like-minded people to discover, learn, and share ideas, stories, and visions, Eden Book-Café is for you. If not for anything, become a member and be a proud patron of a small and independent bookstore," said Mhanthung.
Apart from a wide collection of books, the Book-Café is the popular address for Cappucino, Latte, and Espresso lovers in the district. It has created its own identity in providing quality fast food. It boasts of delicious Pizza, Pasta, Burgers, French fries, Cheese Maggi, Momo and many more.
The Book-Café also promotes local art and crafts. Furthermore, it will also serve as space for local talents to showcase their skills and talents through musical evenings, stand-up comedy shows, book reading sessions, and movie hours.
