1. Aitraaz (2004)
Priyanka Chopra took the risk of doing a negative role like Mrs Sonia Roy in her initial days. And the risk proved to be fruitful. The Abbas-Mustan film ‘Aitraaz’, starring Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead roles, turned out to be a changing point in the career graph of the actress. Her dominant presence as a lust ridden woman who deliberately charges her ex-lover with a sexual harassment case proved to be a game-changer for her. She was the second woman to receive the Filmfare for ‘Best Performance in a negative role’ after Kajol.
2. 7 Khoon Maaf (2011)
7 Khoon Maaf, the masterpiece by Vishal Bhardwaj was based on Ruskin Bond’s short story ‘Susanna’s Seven Husbands’. And Priyanka left no stone unturned to crack the multi-layered character of the femme fatale ‘Susanna’. It gave her enough room to prove her acting capabilities and was one of the most experimental films of her career. Unfortunately, the film didn’t do well in the box-office collection, but it brought critical acclaim for the actor. She received her first Dadasaheb Phalke Award under the category of ‘memorable performance’ for 7 Khoon Maaf.
3. Barfi (2012)
The glamorous Diva didn’t shy away from playing a character like Jhilmil Chatterjee, in Anurag Basu’s film Barfi. Jhilmil is an autistic girl having a problematic relationship with her parents and eventually falls head over heels in love with Barfi, played by Ranbir Kapoor. To slip into the skin of the character, the actress visited many mental health institutions and has spent time with autistic people. With her body language and the innocence in her eyes, she completely nailed the character. Her effortless performance in Barfi has brought many accolades. It is considered to be one of her toughest characters and best performances.
4. Mary Kom (2014)
Priyanka’s performance in the biographical sports drama ‘Mary Kom’ directed by Omung Kumar was a surprise for everyone. The film projected the hurdles faced by the Indian Boxer ‘Mary Kom’ in her journey to live her passion for boxing. And to do justice to the character, she has undergone rigorous training and also learnt boxing in the process. The film won the Best Popular Film at the 62nd National Film Awards presented by then President Pranab Mukherjee.
5. Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Being at the peak of her career, the first Asian Actress to win the People’s Choice Awards, Priyanka Chopra, didn’t restrict herself to safe opportunities. She ventured into the role of Kashi Bai, the first wife of Maratha General Peshwa Bajirao. With her subtle but impactful acting, the actor stole the film. Even though she wasn’t the lead in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Bajirao Mastani’, her acting skills were surely the talk of the town. Her performance in the film was critically acclaimed.
Priyanka Chopra is a game-changer. While Bollywood was obsessed with the flawlessly glamorous depiction of actresses; she tried her hands in unconventional roles. She has never hesitated to take up non-glamorous characters like Jhilmil and negative characters like Mrs Sonia Roy. She took up side roles like Kashi Bai and stole the show. She readily takes up challenges that come her way and shine bright.
