Tinsukia: Amid surge in COVID-19 cases across Assam, a member of the Tinsukia zila parishad succumbed to COVID-19 at a hospital in neighboring Dibrugarh district on Monday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Dipika Chetia, an active member of Bhartiya Janata Party, who got elected as member of Rongpuria Zila Parishad constituency under Itakhooli block in 2018.

According to sources, Chetia, a mother of two, got infected with COVID-19 on May 5. “Her 27-year-old daughter also got infected the same day and they were both admitted at the Civil hospital in Tinsukia.”

“Later they were shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, where Chetia died on Monday,” sources told EastMojo.

Chetia was the vice-president of the BJP’s OBC Morcha.

The husband of the victim, Apran Chetia, a junior engineer at Guijan block, said, “I got my daughter discharged from the hospital after the heartbreaking news of my wife came in. But she has been re-admitted to the Mohkhooli Model Hospital at Bordubi in Tinsukia today.”

Tinsukia saw a steep decline in positivity rate from being over 16 per cent on Sunday to 6 per cent on Monday as 89 fresh cases out of the 1,422 tests done took the active cases load to 996.

The Tinsukia civil hospital, which has 15 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, is running full. Out of 130 general beds in the COVID-19 ward, 110 beds are occupied. Another 5 beds are occupied in the maternity section out of the 20 beds reserved for COVID-19 patients.
