COVID-19: Covaxin cleared for emergency use
Bharat Biotech’s COVID-19 vaccine applicant Covaxin is now cleared by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the national drug regulator to be used for restricted emergencies in India on Saturday.
This locally-produced vaccine is the second vaccine that got the expert panel’s approval after Oxford’s AstraZeneca shot was given a clear check on Friday evening.
According to sources, the committee which is constituted by the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation on Friday stated that the data provided by Bharat Biotech for Covaxin was not sufficient for the granting of emergency use approval.
Dr Randeep Guleria- director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Saturday said India is ready for a mass rollout of the coronavirus vaccine within 10-14 days.
Harsh Vardhan, the Union Health Minister, had appealed to people not to be misguided by misinformation and “rumours” about the efficacy and safety of the COVID-19 vaccines. He stressed that there is no room for compromise on any protocol while approving it.
