Meghalaya: Tura Bishop tests positive for COVID-19 after visiting candlelight vigil

Three other priests and many attendees of the vigil have now been directed to follow self-quarantine

Shillong: Father Andrew R Marak, Bishop of Tura, was admitted to the corona care centre after testing positive for COVID-19. The bishop had attended a candlelight vigil two days before being COVID-19 positive.

Three other priests and many attendees have now been directed to follow self-quarantine. The candlelight vigil was for the arrested Jesuit priest, Father Stan Swamy at Tura Circuit House Road junction earlier on Sunday along with several other religious leaders from different Christian denominations under the banner of Tura-based Christian Churches (TBCC).

The 70-year-old bishop reportedly began experiencing uneasiness two days ago and he is an asthmatic as well. The secretary of Bishop Marak, Fr Rikseng, added that Marak had experienced symptoms of breathlessness which was accompanied by a congested nose and slight fever. The father then decided to get a RAT test done on Monday and was declared positive.

Father CJ Jose, the Auxiliary Bishop of Tura, said that Fr Marak’s conditions have improved as of now and are much better now. Additionally, a team from Holy Cross Hospital has decided to shift the bishop to Shillong for better medical care. He will be shifted to Nazareth Hospital in Shillong on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the attendees of the candlelight vigil are awaiting their COVID-19 test results. Additionally, on Wednesday Meghalaya saw 67 new COVID-19 infections with 129 recoveries. The number of active cases in the State now stands at 961 with 9,241 recoveries so far.
