Sikkim: 2 senior citizens succumb to COVID-19, death toll hits 28

Total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has now reached 2,342 in state, including 1,891 discharged patients

Gangtok: Two senior citizens succumbed to COVID-19 in Sikkim, taking the death toll to 28 in the state.

Both the deceased were from Gangtok. One of them was a 70-year-old Syari resident who was admitted on September 11 and was under intensive care. According to officials, he also had hypertension and he breathed his last on Friday.

The other deceased was a 68-year-old Arithang resident who was admitted on September 14 and was also under intensive care. The ashtmatic patient expired on Saturday morning.

Sikkim has been recording regular deaths from the state capital, mostly with co-morbidities.

Meanwhile, the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has now reached 2,342 with 1,891 being discharged. However, as per sources, most patients are being discharged before they test COVID-19 negative.

There are 426 active cases with five patients in the ICU. Up to 39 new cases were recorded, 34 through RT PCR sampling, four through Rapid Antigen Testing and one case recorded through TRUENAT.

Alarmingly, 14 cases from among the Sahastra Seema Bal personnel have been recorded in far flung Yuksom, in the foothills of Mt Kanchenjunga range in West Sikkim. Geyzing in West Sikkim also recorded three cases from among construction workers. The tally in West Sikkim has now reached 114.

With the second highest number of COVID-19 cases, South Sikkim got a breather amid surge in cases with just two positive cases in Jorethang and Namchi, two densely populated towns in the district. Jorethang has imposed a lockdown showcasing an immediate result with just a single case being recorded on TRUENAT.

Meanwhile, densely-populated East Sikkim district has the highest number of COVID-19 cases with 1,706 so far. Another 22 cases were recorded, with 13 cases being recorded in the Gangtok Municipal Area. Three cases were recorded from Central Referral Hospital Staff quarters, which has steadily been seeing the spread of virus among administration and hospital staffs.

Seven other cases were recorded in the district with six being from towns and hamlets along Singtam-Rangpo areas along the National Highway 10. A single case was recorded from previous hotspot Rongli, further east.
