Agartala: Two days after the former health minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sudip Roy Barman pointed out loopholes in the treatment of COVID-19 positive patients, the axed minister on Monday visited Govind Ballabh Pant hospital to review the situation.

The rebel MLA accompanied by MLA Sushanta Chowdhury met the medical superintendent of GBP hospital and other senior health officers to discuss on how to improve the health service in the state's only COVID-19 hospital.

Earlier on Saturday, Barman had alleged that due to massive loopholes, the department has failed to contain the novel coronavirus resulting in the increasing numbers of deaths in the state.

Speaking with reporters, Barman said that even two days after addressing the media and pointing out the loopholes in the department, he did not see any significant improvement in the services.

“I have not seen any development in the service even two after pointing out the problems being faced by the patients and their families in the GBP hospital. We met with the MS of GBP hospital and other medical officers and discussed the present situation”, Barman said.

He alleged that the people have lost their faith in the treatment being provided at this hospital and are taking discharge willingly, instead of undergoing treatment at the COVID ward.

“I received a call from a pregnant woman, who alleged that she was not being given food. The patients are made to walk from 3rd floor to 5th floor to go collect the food themselves”, Barman added.

He also highlighted that patients not having symptoms and with mild symptoms are also undergoing treatment at the COVID ward.

The former minister requested the senior officers to wear PPE kits and enter in the COVID-19 ward to see the situation themselves for once and make arrangements accordingly.

“"The doctors have assured us that the suggestions given by us would be implemented. The hospital is within my assembly constituency. I cannot get away from my responsibility. I will wait for a few more days and then decide the course of action", Barman added.

Barman was the health minister in the present BJP-IPFT government and was removed from the cabinet on June 1, soon after the Lok Sabha elections, and his portfolio was held by the chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

Sushanta Chowdhury, who accompanied him, echoed the same and said that the situation is going out of our control.

"We have held meetings with officials and proposed some ideas on what needs to be done. We have also highlighted how Assam's health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has successfully dealt with the COVID-19 virus. We are hopeful that the administration and officials will take necessary measures to tackle the situation", Chowdhury said.

He also pointed out that health and education are the two priority sectors in the country, and if people do not receive good health facilities, then there would be no good governance. Health department has to be on par with the state's development.
