Meanwhile, Sum Ronghang has become the first minister in the BJP-led government in the state to contract COVID-19
Guwahati: Officials on Saturday said that Assam hill areas development minister Sum Ronghang became the first minister in the BJP-led government of the state to contract COVID-19. Additionally, three more BJP MLAs tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Saturday.
This takes the total tally of legislators detected positive for COVID-19 in the state to 20, reports said.
Meanwhile, Ronghang has received flak for getting admitted to a private hospital and that too without informing anyone in his office after testing COVID-19 positive on August 25.
An official said that his actions have evoked sharp reactions as these things should never be hidden. Unfortunately, even the minister’s driver and a PSO tested COVID-19 positive.
MLAs Ganesh Kumar Limbo (Barchalla), Sibu Misra (Lumding), and Bir Bhadra Hagjer (Haflong) also tested positive and are being treated at different hospitals. While Misra and Limbo’s test results came out on Friday, Hagjer was diagnosed with novel coronavirus via a rapid antigen test (RAT) inside the assembly premises.
Meanwhile, ahead of the four-day Autumn Session which will start from Monday, the assembly is conducting RAT for all its employees, officials, MLAs and media persons as well.
Moreover, during the two-day testing in the assembly, reports of 14 people, which include a journalist and an MLA, came out positive.
Out of the 20 legislators that tested COVID-19 positive, two are from AGP, 12 are from BJP, and four from its allies. Tarun Gogoi, former CM of Assam, also tested positive on August 25 and is now admitted to GMCH.
