2 cases of COVID-19 reinfection in Telangana; different strains suspected

Guwahati: Telangana on Tuesday reported two new cases of COVID-19 reinfection that happened among its medical professionals. The authorities are now probing if two different strains of the virus are the cause.

Director of public health Telangana Dr G Srinivasa Rao told a leading daily that the medical professionals who tested positive are asymptomatic and RT-PCR tests were done twice. According to Rao, there are chances that the medical professionals got reinfected after getting exposed to a different strain of the virus. He added that the reinfection occurred in one-and-half to two months difference in both the cases.

Although Telangana health officials are uncertain about the reasons they, however, added that they have received more reports of reinfection among the frontline medical staffers in private hospitals.

The health department is noting down the details of the reinfection and will then further probe into the case. Rao added that medical professionals are frequently exposed to the virus all while working in the ICU and isolation wards. This according to him can be the possible cause of reinfection.

Health officials of Telangana state that over 2,000 medical professionals have actually contracted COVID-19. This has resulted in a fast-tracking of recruitment of new doctors to help the state battle the pandemic. As of now, eight doctors succumbed to the novel coronavirus and many more have been affected as the cases continue to surge.

Director of medical examination Dr K Ramesh Reddy said that the government has recently employed 319 medical officers and that too on a contractual basis. They are to be deployed at district-level hospitals. He also said that they are making sure that vital drugs like Remdesivir are available in all hospitals.

As of now, Telangana has reported 1,11,688 cases of COVID-19 out of which 25,685 are active cases and 85,223 discharged. The death toll of the state is 780.
