Mizoram: 35 test positive for COVID-19; tally nears 1,000-mark

Aizawl: Mizoram has reported 35 new cases of novel coronavirus comprising 26 male and nine female in the last 24 hours, taking the total case count to 953, which is 47 short of 1,000-mark, a statement issued by state Information and Public Relation department said on Tuesday.

The statement said that at least 523 samples were tested at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) and Lunglei civil hospital on Monday and 30 of them came out positive for Covid-19.

Besides, Rapid Antigen Test was conducted on 1043 people, of whom 5 were diagnosed with the virus, it said.

Altogether 31 cases were reported from Aizawl district and two each from Kolasib and Mamit districts.

Of the 35 patients, 24 contracted the virus through local contact while the remaining 11 patients returned from outside.

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan and two truck drivers were among the new infected patients, the statement said.

Meanwhile, three people, including 2 BSF jawans, have recovered from the virus and were discharged from a Covid-19 Care Centre (CCC) in Lunglei district on Tuesday, a health department official said.

He said that the total number of active patients now stands at 489 while 464 people have already recovered from the virus.

Mizoram is the only state in the country with less than 1000 cases and a zero fatality case due to Covid-19.

Lakshadweep continues to be the Coronavirus-free, with no cases having been detected on the islands so far.

Among the eight Northeastern states, Assam reported the highest Covid-19 cases at 90,740 followed by Tripura at 8,902, according to a record of Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as on Monday.

Manipur reported 5,246 cases, Nagaland - 3,686, Arunachal Pradesh- 3,263, Meghalaya -1,917 and Sikkim reported 1,403 cases, the ministry said.

As far as fatality is concerned, Assam has reported the highest death toll at 242, followed by Tripura at 73.

So far, at least 22 people have died due to Covid-19 in Manipur, 9 in Nagaland, 8 in Meghalaya, 5 in Arunachal Pradesh and 3 people have died in Sikkim.
