Manipur: 2 more succumb to COVID-19, death toll reaches 24 in state

Imphal: Two women who had tested positive for COVID-19 succumbed to the coronavirus in Manipur on Tuesday, taking the total number of deaths in the state to 24.

The deceased, aged 41 and 73 years, were undergoing treatment at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital's COVID-19 facility in Imphal.

So far, deaths reported due to COVID-19 have been from Imphal West (8), Thoubal (5), Imphal East (3), Kangpokpi (3), Chandel (3), Churachandpur (1) and Bishnupur (1).

In the last 24 hours, 82 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in the state. Among the fresh cases, eight were reported from the Central Armed Police Forces and 74 from the general population.

The total number of confirmed cases has now increased to 5,444, of which 4,013 are from the general population and 1,431 are security personnel.

Of the 74 cases from the general population, only four are returnees belonging to Churachandpur (1), Bishnupur (2) and Chandel (1), said additional health director Dr K Sasheekumar Mangang.

The remaining 70 with no travel history are from Imphal West (38), Imphal East (7), Thoubal (10), Bishnupur (11), Churachandpur (3), Chandel (1).

As on August 25, the recovery rate in the state stands at 70.02 per cent while another 99 COVID-19 infected persons recovered from the coronavirus.

With this, the total number of recovered cases now stands at 3,812, while 1,608 are active.

Meanwhile, as per the new directive for Unlock 3, any gathering related to a social event, political functions, sports, entertainment, religious, academic and cultural activities, among others, continue to remain banned owing to the rapid rise of COVID-19 in the state.

In case of any individual or organisation found violating the directive, a sum of Rs 10,000 shall be imposed as fine.

Also, any person who is found without wearing a face mask in public places and failure to maintain social distancing would be fined Rs 200. Similarly, any other violation of guidelines will attract fine of Rs 1,000, it said.
