Tripura: 2 BSF jawans succumb to COVID-19; toll touches 40 in state

Agartala: As the number of COVID-19 deaths soars in the state, two jawans from the Border Security Force (BSF) succumbed to the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours in Agartala Government Medical College in Tripura.

The first death was of that a 52-year-old from 133 Bn, who was posted in Lal Tilla border outpost (BOP) and was ill since July 28.

“The official was taken to Badarpur PHC, where his sample was tested positive for the virus. On being tested positive for the virus, he was shifted to Badarpur COVID care centre (CCC) on the same day. On August 1, he was referred to Gobind Ballabh Pant (GBP) hospital," an official on condition of anonymity informed.

“The 52-year-old, who hailed from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, was put under ventilation since Friday and succumbed to the virus on Saturday. The deceased had returned from leave on May 30 and was placed under quarantine at 133 Bn headquarters in Nalkata," the official added.

The second death was that of a 51-year-old who was posted in 80 bn BSF in Teliamura under Khowai district of Tripura.

The patient was taken at a private hospital in Kunjaban on Saturday where his sample was tested through a rapid antigen test kit.

“The jawan was taken at ILS at 5:30 am and his samples tested positive and shifted at GBP at 8:30 am where he succumbed to the virus," the official added.

According to the details available, as on July 25, a total of 720 BSF jawans had tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura.

Speaking with EastMojo, Tripura frontier BSF DIG and PRO Nabneet Mehta said, “This is very unfortunate that two of our officials have succumbed to the virus. They have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. They were posted at the border."

“One of the two jawans was suffering from comorbidity conditions including kidney problem, while the other was a nursing assistant. They might have got exposed while attending their duties. They lost their lives at GBP hospital," Mehta said.

He also said that the BSF is checking upon the state guidelines and standard operating protocol (SOP), which will follow that accordingly. He also said that except these two deaths, most of the jawans have recovered from the virus, while some are under the state of recovery.

Meanwhile, till date a total of 6,164 persons have tested positive for COVID-19, of which 3,279 persons have tested positive through rapid antigen testing kits across the state, while 2,738 persons have tested positive through RT-PCR test.

The COVID-19 media bulletin informed that presently 252 persons are under facility quarantine, while 3,693 are under home quarantine. A total of 92 persons were discharged from different COVID Care Centers in the last 24 hours.

So far a total of 1,99,086 samples have collected, out of which 1,97,734 were tested and 6,164 persons have tested positive for the virus, with 40 deaths and 1,876 active cases so far.

The positivity rate stands at 3.04%, test per million at 49,463 while the recovery rate stands at 69.61 % and mortality rate at 0.67%.
