Agartala: At least a hundred doctors staged a protest at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) in Tripura against the suspension of a doctor, who was posted at Shaheed Bhagat Singh COVID Care Centre (CCC) during the visit of former health minister Sudip Roy Barman on August 2.

The agitating doctors are from three organisations— Indian Medical Association (IMA), Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) Teachers Forum and All Tripura Association Doctors Association (ATGA).

Speaking with reporters, Dr Rajesh Choudhuri said that they are upset to hear about the suspension of Dr Uttam Bhattacharjee and they feel that the decision is an assault on the entire medical community.

“We have heard that Dr Bhattacherjee who was posted COVID Care Centre was suspended because he did not stop a public representative during his visit at the Centre. We are not sure of the cause behind the suspension but if the Dr was suspended for that reason then, it is unfair on his part," Choudhuri said.

Earlier on Tuesday, a letter issued by joint secretary Debashish Das said that a disciplinary proceeding is contemplated against Dr Uttam Bhattacharjee, an assistant professor of the Department of Ophthalmology of AGMC.

The order also cited that Dr Bhattacharjee was suspended under sub rule (I) of Rule 10 of the Central Civil Service (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1965. The doctor was ordered not to leave Agartala without prior permission of competent authority.

The AGMC and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) hospital is the only state referral hospital which also has the lone dedicated COVID Hospital of Tripura.

Dr Damodar Chattarjee said that their demand to withdraw the suspension order of Dr Bhattacharjee would continue as he had not committed any offence.

MLA Sudip Roy Barman had visited Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel, which falls under his constituency, to meet COVID-19 patients on Sunday.
