Agartala: A 31-year-old COVID-19 patient died by suicide at Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Speaking with reporters, GBP resident medical officer (RMO) Dr Bidhan Goswani confirmed the incident.

The deceased, who hailed from Muhuripur village in Baikhora area of South Tripura district, was admitted to GBP hospital on Friday over a case of poisoning.

He had reportedly consumed poison following which he was rushed to GBP Hospital and admitted in the male medicine ward, where he was tested through a rapid antigen testing kit on arrival. His samples were found to be positive for COVID-19.

Later, he was shifted to COVID ward in GBP Hospital around 11 pm and was undergoing treatment for the virus.

“He was undergoing treatment at the COVID ward but in the wee hours of Saturday, he woke up from his bed and died by suicide," a medical staffer said.

He succumbed to his injuries, said the medical staffer.

Speaking with reporters, GB police out post Officer in-charge Rakesh Patwari said that the preliminary investigation suggests that the patient was suffering from some mental illness or trauma indicating his past attempts to end his life.

“He was admitted at the COVID-19 ward where deploying security is not possible, so we know what exactly happened. The statement of the deceased family and history of the past attempts to kill himself suggest that he was suffering from depression," Patwari said.

The police have registered a case in this regard and the body has been sent for post-mortem by the police.
