Manipur CM inspects new 300-bedded COVID-19 Care Centre in Imphal

The centre, which will initially have 300 beds and 4 blocks, is likely to be upgraded to 1,000-bed capacity, given enough space for extension

Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday inspected the work progress of the upcoming 300-bedded COVID-19 Care Centre at Manipur Trade and Expo Centre at Lamboikhongnangkhong in Imphal West district.

Singh was accompanied by health minister L Jayantakumar Singh, deputy chief minister Y Joykumar Singh, newly appointed chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar and other officials.

According to CM Singh, the centre, which will initially have 300 beds and four blocks, is likely to be upgraded to 1,000-bed capacity, given enough space for an extension and to address the incessant rise of COVID-19 cases in the state.

“As more and more accommodation is needed in view of the increasing number of Covid positive patients in the state, went to inspect the condition of the new 300 bedded (may increase to 1000) #COVID Care Centre at Manipur Trade & Expo Centre, Lamboikhongnangkhong, which will be functional in a few days,“ Singh tweeted.

Each block will have basic essentials, including furniture and separate toilet facilities. The centre is likely to start functioning within a couple of days, as per the official.

Singh has also directed the officials to keep the centre ready for admission of COVID-19 patients by Sunday.

At present, there are at least 13 COVID-19 Care Centres which are already functioning across the state. In addition, another four centres are in the offing, including the Manipur Trade and Expo Centre.

The other three centres under process are at State TB Hospital, Keirao Wangkhem in Imphal East, Model School, Harinagar in Jiribam and Kangpokpi districts.

Earlier, health minister L Jayantakumar Singh had also inspected the preparation of the 300-bedded centre and informed that it would be functional in a few days.

Over the past few weeks, Manipur has seen increasing cases, especially non-returnees having exposed to the virus, putting great concerns to the public.

So far, the state has recorded total 2,621 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, of which 1,689 persons have recovered and 931 are undergoing treatment at the hospitals.

At least six persons have succumbed to the virus.
