MUMBAI: With Ganesh Chaturthi just around the corner, the immersion of the idols will hold a different visage altogether in the year 2020 for Mumbai residents.

Bhihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in an order stated that the mandals and people in containment zones will have to immerse idols in a metallic tank.

The BMC on Friday said that the mandals have to immerse the idols in their own pandals and as for people living in buildings that are sealed will have to immerse the idols at home or inside the buildings.

“People/Ganeshotsav Mandals in containment zones will have to immerse idols in a metallic tank or something else inside containment zone itself. Also, people living in buildings that are sealed must immerse idols at their homes,” the order stated.

The festival which is usually celebrated with great pomp and show in Mumbai and the whole of Maharashtra will hold a solemn look this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The livelihood of many individuals associated with the festivities has been adversely affected this year. Every year the festival alone generates a minimum turnover of Rs 70 crore.

However, the state alone reported 11,147 COVID-19 cases just on Thursday with Mumbai reporting 1,118 cases in a single day. Additionally, there are 622 containment zones in the city alone

Keeping this in mind, the civic body even appealed Ganesh mandals in Mumbai that instead of cultural programmes they should conduct health camps and even create awareness about health issues.

The 10-day festival which usually draws in thousands of devotees will begin on August 22 this year.
