It will take 7-8 days to complete door-to-door survey, hence extension of lockdown is important, says CM Biplab Kumar Deb
Agartala: With the number of novel coronavirus cases surging in Tripura, the state government on Wednesday extended the ‘total lockdown’ for another five days in a move to contain the spread of virus.
Addressing the state in 23-minute video message, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb said: "We are passing through a phase where social distancing, wearing face masks and awareness will keep us safe."
“Three days of lockdown are not enough to break the chain of coronavirus. If continuous lockdown is not enforced then lockdown would have no meaning. At least eight days of lockdown is required to break the chain," Deb said.
He also said that the lockdown ensures less movement of people and less movement ensures lesser spread of the virus.
“During lockdown, the inter-district, inter-state movements are less, as a result the virus remains in one place and lockdown helps in that. So far, 21 persons have succumbed to the virus. A large number of people are above 60 years of age, though," Deb added.
He also said that Tripura is the only state to have started door-to-door surveying households asking about their health status.
“Once we touch all nine lakh families, we will have an idea of the state's position and total positive cases in the state. It will take seven to eight days to complete the survey, therefore extension of the lockdown is important”, Deb said.
Speaking further, he said that in the first two days 3,88,782 households were covered and 9,855 people were identified and 5687 samples were collected and 196 people tested positive for the virus.
“Around 12,000 workers are engaged in the survey, while 711 testing centres have been set up to test the samples through an antigen testing kit. Anybody having symptoms, fever, cold and cough and any symptom, on getting a positive response they are being provided with treatment”, Deb added.
He also said that the Eid celebration would be restricted due to lockdown. “Due to the lockdown we could not celebrate Rath Yatra, Pohila Boishakh, Kher Puja, Kharchi Puja. It is my appeal to the brothers to celebrate Eid on a low scale maintaining social distancing," Deb added.
