COVID-19: Tripura announces 3-day 'total lockdown' from 5 am, Monday

Agartala: Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday announced a three-day ‘total lockdown’ starting from July 27, exempting emergency services from the restrictions imposed across the state.

Addressing the state, Deb in his video message said that with the people returning from outside, the state has seen a rapid increase in the number of actually COVID-19 cases. The three-day lockdown is very crucial as a massive drive to test people across the state would begin from Monday across the state.

“A number of people who have returned from outside and their family members have tested positive for the virus. Currently, there are over 1,500 active COVID-19 cases in the state. We will test the samples of all the vulnerable groups and symptomatic persons in the next week,“ Deb said.

He also said the lockdown will start from 5 am on Monday, July 27, and remain in force till 5 am of July 30, restricting all the activities, except for essential services and sectors mentioned in the order copy.

“I also appeal the people to stay at home during these three days unless there is any medical emergency. Based on the results of the testing, the government would take the next course of decision,“ Deb added.

The chief minister also announced Rs 1,000 as honorarium to all the health workers engaged in COVID-19 treatment across the state.

Later on Saturday evening, law minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the testing centres would be set up in all Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, subdivision, district and state hospitals.

"In addition to the above centres, the state government will also set up testing centres in panchayat offices and government schools wherever required,“ Nath added.

The testing team will comprise of Asha workers, Anganwadi workers, Gram Rozgar Sevaks and one medical officer who will sign the testing reports and update the ICMR portal.

Meanwhile, an order copy signed by the chief secretary of Tripura Manoj Kumar read, "It has come to the notice of the State Government that there is spread of COVID-19 occurring in different parts of the state which has posed a major threat to public health, hygiene and safety of the people.

“...I therefore, in the capacity of the Chairman of the State Executive Committee of Tripura State Disaster Management Authority, in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 22 (2) (h) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 direct enforcement of "Total Lockdown" in entire area of the State of Tripura for 3 days w.e.f. 5 A.M. of 27th July (Monday) to 5 AM on 30 July (Thursday). This will be in continuation of night curfew to be in force at 9 PM on 26th July (Sunday)”, the order copy of Manoj Kumar reads.

The total tally of positive cases in the state now stands at 3,778, of which 1,538 are active, 11 died and 2,210 persons recovered.
